GADDAFI - WHAT WENT WRONG?

The end of one man, yes, one man, not God, not Satan (well, some may say so), not superhuman, but one mortal man came today, thanks to the NATO backed NTC fighters. But how he died is not of much importance now.
As everyone celebrates, or so it seems, at the fall of Colonel Gaddafi, many questions linger in the minds of those who don't just take things at face value, like the events that led to the uprising, not by the people of Libya, but by rebels opposed to Col Gaddafi, and supported by NATO in their pursuit to overthrow his 42 year hold of the leadership of this oil rich country.
The reason I say that I think it is not the people of Libya who rose against their Leader will be explained later. I used to believe that Muamar Gaddafi was a good, necessary dictator. I almost changed that, but then, I thought, before I make such a drastic shift, I had to revisit the reasons behind my first belief. I outline them hereunder:-
Gaddafi used Libya's oil revenues to improve the lives of his people by:-
- Providing free Healthcare and Education.
- Providing housing. Each Libyan family was entitled to a state grant of $50,000, equivalent of over KES 5 million towards buying a new house.
- Access to credit and at very affordable repayments. Bank loans were given as per Islamic anti-usury laws, interest free.
Apart from taking care of its people, Gaddafi maintained a debt free state.
So, how were these very strong ties between Gaddafi and his people fractured?
BIG QUESTION.
